Of all mythological creatures the Dragon is one of the most popular. Noble valiant knights of Middle Ages who speared each other and cut each others heads off at stadiums never forgot to swear to their Fair Ladies to kill for their honour several fire-breathing monsters.

Zoologists often called dragons various lizards. The most popular of them are Dragon Lizards (Agamids), Komodo Dragon, Flying Dragon from South Asia and Forest Dragon (there are several dozens of species of Forest Dragons). Modern dragons have nothing in common (except the fact they all are called dragons). They differ in size, in way of life, they belong to different families. The only common trait - they look fantastic and unreal.

It has been for two months already that there are classes for Zoo specialists and Zoo keepers. It is for the first time in our practice that the main topic of the classes is … spare time of inhabitants of Kharkov Zoo. This is not a joke! This summer we created a topic in the web-site of Kharkov Zoo “Say “No” to Boredom” informing our visitors of problems of leisure of Zoo animals.

Days of winter solstice have come when the night is the longest and the day is the shortest. Life seems to be sad and uncoloured to many people during this period. This feeling may be reinforced by absence of snow that brightens up the twilight. There also exists a special term – winter depression. Due to that, few people come out for a walk in the fresh air.

Municipal Ecology Ethics Conference for Children "Spiritual Connection of Humans with Nature" is joint-led by Kharkov Zoo, Kharkov regional organization of Green Party of Ukraine, Ecological Group "Pechenegy", Ecological Public Organization "Ecocentre" in support of governmental program "General Guidelines of Upbringing of Pupils of 1-12 form of Schools of General Education of Ukraine" and "Concept of Ecological education of Ukraine."

Aims and Goals of the Conference:

Encouraging feelings of spiritual attitude to the nature and live creatures. Upbringing patriotic feelings and love to the smallest nooks of nature.

Since ancient times bear used to be the most terrible carnivore in Europe. There were no lions and the bear was called "king of animals".

Notwithstanding the fact that winter in the Zoo is not a busy period, 3 December 2011 it was quite gay and crowded. This day a new enclosure was opened. This enclosure is quite unique. Its inhabitant is not only a Zoo animal but also a talisman of Kharkov Football Team. It is a polecat. Polecat was chosen for the mascot of "Metallist" football team. 16 July 2011 fans of Kharkov football team organized the project "Buy your team a talisman!". The goal of the project was buying of the animal and creation of good conditions of its keeping in Kharkov Zoo.

Kharkov Zoo Together with "Triolan" Company Announced the Contest for the Best Script for the Movie about Animals Written by Children from 12 to 17 years. The goal of the project is to encourage the young to contribute in creation of positive image of our beloved Zoo.

The Collection of Gifts of Autumn is Over. Those citizens of Kharkov who brought vegetables and fruit told that it was quite nice to do something good for the Zoo and to visit the Zoo for free.

We would like to give a special thanks to Yu.V. Pashchenko who has rendered help to our Zoo more than once. This year he brought 82 kg of cabbage and 602 kg of pumpkins.

3 December 2011 11.00 on the territory of Kharkov Zoo there was opened an enclosure for one of our animals. It would be an ordinary event but this is actually a facility consisting of three enclosures constructed for an animal- talisman of Kharkov Football team "Metallist". The happy new settlers will be a polecat and his family. The polecat was chosen as talisman by fans of football club.
